TMJ Therapy

TMJ Therapy

At Rippe Dental Associates, we provide TMJ therapy in Centennial, CO to help patients find relief from jaw discomfort and protect their long-term oral health. Our approach focuses on evaluating how the jaw joints, bite, teeth, and surrounding muscles work together so we can recommend care that fits your needs.

What Is TMJ Disorder?

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull and help you speak, chew, yawn, and move your mouth comfortably. When these joints are irritated, strained, or not resting in the right position, it can lead to pain and tension throughout the jaw, face, head, and neck.

TMJ disorder can develop for several reasons, including teeth grinding, clenching, bite imbalance, stress, injury, genetics, or changes in the way the upper and lower teeth come together. Because the jaw is closely connected to the teeth and bite, dental care can play an important role in TMJ therapy.

Signs You May Need TMJ Therapy

TMJ symptoms can be mild at first, but they may worsen over time if the underlying issue is not addressed. Some patients in Centennial notice discomfort when chewing, while others experience headaches or jaw tension after waking up.

Common signs of TMJ disorder may include:

  • Jaw clicking, popping, or locking

  • Jaw soreness or facial tenderness

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Ear discomfort or pressure

  • Teeth grinding or clenching

  • Worn, chipped, or sensitive teeth

  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth

  • Pain while chewing

If these symptoms sound familiar, a TMJ evaluation can help determine whether your jaw joints or bite may be contributing to the problem.

How TMJ Therapy Can Help

At Rippe Dental Associates, TMJ therapy often begins with a non-surgical, non-invasive oral splint. This custom appliance is designed to help support a more comfortable jaw position, reduce strain on the joints, and limit the effects of teeth grinding or clenching. The splint is carefully fitted and calibrated to your bite, jaw position, and symptoms, making it different from a generic mouthguard.

For some patients, Dr. Rippe may recommend wearing a MAGO splint before creating a long-term TMJ appliance. This helps identify the most comfortable resting position for the jaw joints. In some cases, the splint may also help retrain the jaw muscles so the joints naturally rest in a healthier position, even when the appliance is not being worn. Other patients may need to continue wearing the splint at night as ongoing therapy.

Depending on the cause of the TMJ disorder, additional treatment options may include building up the back teeth with dental crowns to help balance the bite or using braces to correct a malocclusion that may be contributing to jaw strain. At our Centennial dental office, we evaluate each patient carefully to determine which TMJ therapy option best supports long-term comfort, function, and oral health.

Personalized Care for TMJ disorder in Centennial, CO

TMJ disorder does not look the same for every patient. Some people need support for nighttime grinding, while others may have bite-related concerns that place ongoing stress on the jaw joints. During your visit, we evaluate your symptoms, oral health, bite, and signs of tooth wear to better understand what may be causing your discomfort. Our goal is to provide practical, personalized TMJ therapy in Centennial that helps reduce discomfort while supporting the health and function of your smile.
